Working with Covid
Covid arrived like a thunderstorm and disrupted everyone’s life. Households were torn apart, companies were shaken to care and people all around were in a state of chaos. Many lost their loved ones, their homes, and even jobs. Amid this crisis, there were people who were trying hard to provide some calm in this chaos. However, with time when things settled down, we can see that Covid has changed the system of jobs in India. Where terms like remote and part-times were only hidden words are now a buzzing term in the corporate sector. Not only because people find it much more convenient, but because with remote work a lot of companies were able to recruit a more diverse number of people.
There is no set date when Covid would vanish, so, it is upon us to learn to live with it. If you are a job seeker trying to find work during Covid, here are a few smart tips that can help you in the process.
Get comfortable with the virtual experience or working and giving interviews A lot of jobs in India have set guidelines for sticking to remote work. Taking meetings at home, having all the leisures at a hand’s distance and getting enough rest does sound like a dream but it is not as comfortable as it seems.
Several employees have detested work from home, for a simple reason - no work-rest boundary. The room where you sleep is the same room where you work. This way, one can neither take rest nor work properly. If you are in that remote working environment, it is paramount to set workstations where once you sit, your brain automatically knows it is time to work.
Now we were all floating in the same boat once, where we wore a shirt and boxers underneath for comfort. However, this again does not help you make the best of your work. One should dress professionally head to toe and avoid virtual backgrounds like that of a beach or space.
You cannot expect a human to go through thousands of applications word by word! Don’t submit one resume for all jobs.
Read the job description and edit your resume with keywords you can find. This makes your resume detectable by the bots. Leading job boards use AI-powered applicant tracking systems which shortlist candidates. These systems target keywords that are relevant to the job profile.
You might have worked in the same field and have ample expertise for the job role but if you don’t edit your resume according to the job demand, the bots might not shortlist your resume.
Remember, as you apply for jobs, you are building your future. Covid has impacted the industry deeply and the demands for jobs have also changed. You might want to pick a career that is at boom now and has a growing demand as the times change. Jobs in India are now shapeshifting with each day.
Build your network and social profiles.
Networking is more meaningful than you can imagine. You can love or hate LinkedIn but once you catch hold of its usages, you won’t find any other media better. For starters, begin with crafting a spot-on summary of yourself, your hobbies and your work experience.
Add project and include your responsibilities along with the skills used. You can populate your profile with your skillsets, share your work experiences and network with people.
Amid the stress and remote reality of the pandemic, soft skills such as flexibility, listening, and empathy have never been more important. Leaders who don’t like managing change are having a worse year than others.
Showing demonstrable soft skills, which you can bring up in the course of discussing challenging projects and/or working relationships, can put you at the top of the candidate list.
At last, you can also work on certain certification courses for landing your next job as a fresher.
The path of finding a job is hard but the best advice is, even in these times of crisis, don’t lose hope!
